SCCA OIL RECYCLING CHAMPIONS REGIONAL, Thunderhill, April 24-25, 2004

Dobson's contact trying to out-brake Justin into turn 14SCCA Spec Miata Race 2 of the SFR/SCCA 2004 season proved to be very exciting. Over 50 miatas practiced, qualified and raced on Saturday. It was exceptional that the 30 minute race had no full course yellows and only one DNF. Outstanding for so many cars on the track! During qualifying on a hot slow track, Justin took pole with a 2:10.869 and was less than .1 sec off the qualifying record set in 2002. Ken Dobson took off pole, Tommy O in 3rd, Peter was in position 5 and Dave qualified 7th. Lap traffic holding-up Justin as he trys to catch Ken in turn 9After talking over their start strategy, the green flag resulted in Dave bumping Peter who bumped Tommy who bumped Justin in front of Ken Dobson just before turn one. For over 15 nail biting minutes Justin held off Dobson, who continuously made moves to pass but never made it stick. At one point the frustrated Ken tried to out brake Justin going into turn 14 which resulted in body contact (Justin's car is no longer a virgin) and Justin still kept the lead. When they finally hit lapped traffic, Ken capitalized on a situation when a Rookie driver held up Justin, and took the lead. Justin did his best but was never able to overtake Ken. He finished on the podium in 2nd place. Dave had a great start and moved up several positions then battled back and forth with Dave Vodden and Peter to eventually finish in 5th. Peter ran a great race, but a small error resulted in an 8th place finish. The rest of the Off Camber paddock had great fun and ran their best, with Brian Davies finishing in 17th , Bill Boom 23rd, Ron Thompson 26th, Larry Harper 33rd and David Kay finishing 41st. Justin had the fastest lap of the race a 2:12.030.
