This was the weekend of chasing Mike Courtney....after practice Mike found himself besting the field by over a second, followed by Olivier, then Railton to round out the top three. Qualifying confirmed that the real battle of the weekend would be for second place, with Courtney again holding a distinct advantage qualifying on pole. However, the next few positions switched around a bit from practice with Hall qualifying second, and Ed Railton rounding out the top three. Chris Cook managed a season best 4th qualifying position, Peter Hsu 5th, Tommy Olivier 6th, and Dave McAnaney in 7th placing three Off Camber Racing cars in the top 7.
The race proved a uneventful from the top 3's perspective, with 30 cars taking the green flag which is a large field relative to other classes but relatively small by SM standards. Hall managed to keep Courtney close for a couple laps, in sight for the better part of the race, but Mike ended up finishing the race with a margin of victory of ~14 seconds. Railton was able to keep Hall close, and threatened on more than one occasion being consistently quicker from 2-5 but Hall proved faster on the back sections of the track and was able to keep Railton at bay and finish 2nd comfortably with Railton rounding out the top 3. Chris Cook maintained the qualifying / finish order to this point grabbing 4th, Olivier nabbed 5th, Stobba 6th, Hsu 7th and McAnaney survived a spin on the first lap induced by avoiding another spinner hard charging back up the field to round out the top 8.
The final race double points race of the year will prove to be exciting, with the final positions in large part deciding the top four positions of the season championship. Counting the low point throw away races, current point standings are as follows:
Olivier: 218 McAnaney: 204 Railton: 200 Hall: 198
Given it's a double points weekend, 4 points will separate each finishing position. Olivier seems to have a commanding lead, but if McAnaney manages to beat Olivier by 4 positions, and no less than one position behind Railton and Hall, McAnaney will win the championship. Railton and McAnaney's position could be decided via tie breaker, as Railton needs to finish 2 positions better than McAnaney since McAnaney owns the tie breaker. Railton and Hall's relative position will be decided by whomever beats the other. And obviously Hall needs to beat McAnaney by 2 positions or more to overtake, and Olivier by 6 positions or more to overtake.
